In December 2018 it was announced that for the very first time a mixed squad of six players would represent England on a New Year tour of Australia.
Emily Toy from Cornwall and Cara Gainer from Oxfordshire were the first women to take part in the annual trip. It would be a great experience to prepare for the season ahead and rewards Emily for all the hard work she has put in to achieve this inclusion.
Emily played the extremely tough and challenging Royal Melbourne golf course in the Australian Master of Amateurs in her first event and finished an amazing 18th place after 4 tough rounds. Emily was competing amongst some of the best amateurs in the world and performed superbly under extreme pressure.
After this event was the New South Wales Amateur Strokeplay Championships at Mona Vale Golf Club. Emily played superb golf in the 36 hole strokeplay event and came away as the NSW 36 hole strokeplay champion finishing on 4 under and winning by one shot from New Zealand’s Carmen Lim and first round leader Min A Yoon who could only manage a 3 over par 76. Emily shot a new course record with her 3 under final round. Emily would then go on to the match play stages but would lose a hard fought match against Australian Sarah Lee 2/1.
Finally Emily played in the Avondale Amateur Championships in Australia and was tied in first place after her opening round. Emily had a tough second round but kept on fighting and in doing so made the cut. Emily moved up the leaderboard to 11th place after round 3 and after 4 rounds moved herself up to finish in 5th place.
A very successful trip ‘down under’ for our Emily and what a great ambassador for England and Cornish Golf.
Emily showed true Cornish grit and determination throughout her experience in Australia and was rightfully rewarded by being named in the England Women’s team for the 2019 season on her return home. This was fully deserved with some fantastic results already this year on this and the other side of the planet.
Congratulations for your achievements Emily. We are all very proud of you.
